[...] Indeed, the last TV series, “Enterprise” had a relatively short life, only 4 years, compared with earlier The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, or Voyager. In a few days on May 8, 2009 we’ll see J.J. Abrams‘ vision of a Star Trek reboot with the debut of the 11th Star Trek feature film and hope rings eternal for Trek junkies like me.
To add, I especially appreciated the way the "violence" scenes were handled. Far too often these days, it seems to me, that Hollywood always seems to be *searching* for opportunities to put highly graphical violence scenes into its movies, just for the sake of having such scenes. Remember the "propeller guy" from the movie, Titanic?
Violence scenes in Star Trek were not gratutitous, in my opinion, nor nearly as graphical as they could have been, and not nearly as disturbing as I had come to expect from Hollywood. I very much appreicated that.

Scott Hudson, there was mention of Archer. Scotty mentions the fact that he was stationed there in the middle of no where is b/c of (SPOILER) what he does to Admiral Archer's Beagle (END SPOILER). CHeck it out.

I agree with all of your points about the movie. Absolutely stunning - especially in IMAX format!

SPOILER ALERT:
There were quite a few nods to the original series and the movies that I loved, including the creature from Ceti Alpha (ST:II), the Orion girl, Captain Pike, the Phase Cannons (loose tie to Enterprise), Sulu's swordfighting...

I was hoping there would be a little tie-in with the Star Trek: Enterprise show (perhaps having Archer or Trip mentioned), especially since it was a prequel too. Perhaps the explanation of the altered timeline negates that whole series... I REALLY liked the use of Captain Pike in this film, so I'm OK with this approach.

My only complaint is the Uhura relationship. It just didn't feel right to me. Also, since they got a Russian for Chekov, I was hoping they'd also get an actual Scot for Scotty. The englishman they got was OK, but had a pretty minor role.

Bones almost stole the show. He was hilarious and absolutely in character. Spock and Kirk were also very well played.

In all, a very welcome re-start to the franchise. One I hope will continue to boldly go...

Great review, Doc. I thought about you throughout the entire film - wondering if you were enjoying this as much as I was. Thanks for turning me on to Star Trek all those years ago.
